White Dresses for Baptism? Here is my rant...

My good friend Val is a convert to the LDS Church.  Her youngest daughter is getting baptized on Sunday.  She was getting pretty worried because she couldn't find her daughter's white dress.  I burst out laughing and told her it was not in the Baptism Rule Book that girls wear white dresses on their baptism day.

3284 - Taffeta Bubble Dress

Then I thought I had better check out the ultimate rule book...."To the Google!"

I found this post:
"The problem is that DD isn't really aware of the tradition because it wasn't a big thing where we lived before. But I've seen every one of the 9 or 10 little girls in her soon to be Activity Day's group wear a white dress to church. They are obviously the after baptism dress. (Parents don't generally buy rowdy, bouncy little girls pure white dresses just to wear on any old Sunday.) I doubt DD will be aware of the tradition before her baptism next month but I don't want her to feel gypped either once she gets to know these girls in the ward better and finds out she didn't get a new white dress to put on after. Then we have another little girl coming up close on her heels. For sure they will both be appraised of the tradition by the time she gets baptized in 16 months. I always feel like a bad mom when I buck these traditions. (We don't do sleepovers either and I've taken endless flack for it.)

Another thing my husband pointed out is that he doesn't want our kids identifying these sacred ordinances with all the things they'll get. He wants them to be focused on the spiritual blessings rather than the physical presents. My daughter is already asking her grandma to give her a blanket for her baptism since one of her friend's grandma gave her granddaughter a "comforter" to represent the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I don't know. I'm still sitting on the fence on this one. But I'll probably side with my husband since our older daughters say they didn't miss having the white dress, and because I'm basically very practical by nature. "

WHO STARTED THIS "TRADITION"?  You wear white as you are being baptized.  Then you change into your normal church clothes.  It may be a new suit or dress that you get, but it does not have to a white dress.

Tradition?  Bah!  This is just a group of people wanting to be better "Mormons" than others.  A tradition is a ritual, belief or object passed down within a society, still maintained in the present, with origins in the past.[1  (wikipedia)

Do what you want, wear what you want, but don't make a sacred ordinance less sacred because you have to keep up with the Jones.

I guess I am one of the people whose socks don't have to match their underwear.

I never got a white dress either and I don't know any of my friends or family members who did. I've never heard of that tradition. I don't think they're wanting to be "better Mormons" though, they're just getting sucked into a trivial "tradition" idea... I think we all do that about some things sometimes...

we are catholic and adopted a 12 year old daughter from the ukraine in russia.to symbolize her starting over we baptized her as an infant at our parish thru the infant baptism program.we dressed her as an infant in the traditional white ankle length gown, head bonnet, lace anklets and satin booties.we did a cloth diaper, rubber pants and under shirt under her gown as her infant under garments.she looked adorable as a baby girl and was accepted into gods kingdom as as an infant.

I am a catholic woman in my early 50s and at my parish it is a tradition for the little girls, preteen and teen girls to wear white poofy, above the knees dresses with a bonnet, lace anklets or tights and patent leather shoes for their baptisms at easter vigil and private baptisms.they also wear a cloth diaper and rubber pants under the dresses.i have seen hundreds of girls baptized over the years in these outfits and feel it is very appropriate for them.they are symbolizing their purity and innocence of an infant entering gods kingdom.many girls wear provacative clothing in their every day life and dont take their purity seriously so by wearing the white infant type outfits for their baptisms, they are sending a message to the rest of the congregation that they are worthy of gods kingdom.i have also visited other parishes over the years and seen the girls wearing these outfits also so it is not just my parish.

We belong to a large traditional parish in St.Paul and for baptism all the kids, preteens and teens wear all white oufits.this is done for individual, group, and easter vigil baptisms. The boys wear a white suit and tie,the girls a poofy, white top of the knees dress with either a bonnet, flowered headwreath,or a veil, white tights and white mary janes.Like the poster above the girls also wear a cloth diaper and rubber pants under their tights with a white under shirt.this past easter vigil, the majority of the older teen girl wore a bonnet with their dresses and some had the veil. All of the girls looked very pure and innocent in their outfits.after their baptisms, the girls wear the diaper, rubber pants, tights, under shirt and mary janes with their first communion outfits a month later.our daughter is now 18 and was baptized at easter vigil last year when she was 17 and wore the outfit with the bonnet, etc.

My daughter,Faith, made her first holy communion at age 11 at St.Jeromes and per their requirements had to wear the communion dress, veil, tights and patent leather shoes.a cloth diaper and rubber pants was required under the tights,so i sewed baby cloth diapers together to make on diaper out of them and then found a pair of white toddler size rubber pants to go over it.they looked cute under her tights.all of the little girls in her class had the toddler size rubber pants over their diaper.

Our daughter,Sammi, made her FIRST HOLY COMMUNION at St.Patricks in Edina when she was 14.It is a strong parish tradition for the girls to wear a cloth diaper and rubber pants under their white tights with their communion dresses,so Sammi wore the cloth diaper that was velcroed on instead of pinned and had white adult size medium rubberpants over it.The rubberpants bunched up under her tights.the little girls in her class all wore youth size rubberpants over their diaper.

Our daughter,Eliza, who's now 20,was baptized 4 years ago at 16 at Holy CROSS Parish and the nuns required her to wear a white mid-calf length dress with a bonnet, lace anklets and white mary jane shoes.the head nun gave her a cloth diaper and plastic pants that she had to wear under the dress with a camisole top.she was baptized with another 16 year old girl and she had to wear the same outfit also.the daughter wasnt happy about having to wear the bonnet and the diaper and plastic pants.

Our 15 year old daughter just made her First communion last sunday and per the parish dress code had to wear a cloth diaper and adult size rubberpants under her communion dress.I loved seeing her in the dress and veil and knowing she was pure as a baby with the diaper and rubberpants under the dress.

Our daughter is 16 and was just baptized back in September in the fall preteen/teen baptism class. She chose to wear the white, infant style, high waist, top of the knees baptism gown with a matching bonnet,[gown and bonnet made for her]with white tights, and white mary jane shoes. She then chose as her baptismal diaper,to wear a size 8 pampers cruiser diaper with a pair of white, adult size rubberpants over it under her tights and had a white tee shirt as her top.She even went so far as to have a pacifier on a pink ribbon around her neck and used it some. She looked very cute and infant like! All the other girls baptized with her were in similar outfits-some had the poofy dresses, others had the baptism gowns.

We baptized our daughter when she was 13 and did her as a regular infant in a poofy white, knee length gown with a matching bonnet, lace anklets and white satin booties and under her gown we did the gerber flat cloth diapers with the gerber toddler size rubberpants over them and a white tee shirt as her top.We hung a pacifier around her neck that she sucked on while the water was being poured on her head.wHEN SHE MADE HER fIRST HOLY COMMUNION a year later,we did the diapers and rubberpants and tee shirt on her again under her communion dress.

Our niece is 16 and lives in a medium size town up north and was baptized at easter vigil this past easter. Her and all the other preteen and teen girls wore white, infant style, knee length baptism gowns with a matching bonnet, white tights and white shoes. They all had the cloth diaper and plastic pants under their tights with a tee shirt as their top.The niece looked very cute and pure in her outfit and entered gods kingdom as a baby.

Our granddaughter is 16 and lives in Boston and will be finially recieving her Sacrement of Baptism at Easter vigil. Her parish is old school and strict and for baptism at easter vigil, the boys 17 and under wear white suits and ties. The girls 17 and under, including the granddaughter, all wear a white, poofy, top of the knees, bouffant shoulder, baby doll style dress with a matching bonnet, white tee shirt, cloth diapers, plastic pants, white tights and the white mary jane shoes. The teen girls normally wear the Gerber flat cloth diapers in the 24x27 inch size and are pinned on them with diaper pins and there plastic pants are adult size and fit blousy over their diapers and bunch up under their tights. It is very special for the girls to wear the outfit and symbolize their purity and innocence of an infant entering gods kingdom. In the past some of the teen girls have gone so far as to have a pacifier worn on a ribbon around their necks, and some have carried a baby blanket that is wraped around their shoulders after their baptism.Having been to many Easter vigils and seen the girls in their white outfits,i think they all look very infant like and cute. Our granddaughter all ready has her babydoll baptism dress and bonnet on order along with her plastic pants. Her diapers and tee shirt and tights will be bought at Walmart in the next few weeks.

We live in central Illinois and when me and my twin sister were 15 our parents and us joined the local parish. We were told that as part of the joining process, that sis and i had to be baptized first. Both of us and our parents were handed a sheet listing the required outfit we had to wear for our baptism. We looked at it and it sis and i were flabbergasted! The required outfit was a white, knee length, short sleeve, infant style baptism gown with a matching bonnet, white tee shirt, cloth diaper, rubberpants, white tights and white mary jane shoes! Our parents ordered our gowns and bonnets and the rubberpants thru the baptism director, and then we had to get the tee shirt, two packages of the cloth diapers and diaper pins, and the white tights and the shoes. Our mom sewed each package of the 10 flat cloth diapers together to make one diaper for each of us.A week later, our gowns and bonnets and rubberpants came in and we went to the parish to pick them up.The rubberpants were adult size and looked just like baby rubberpants! Two weeks later sis and i were dressed in the outfits in the parish nursery and baptized during sunday mass.We both felt weird standing there with our parents dressed just like babies and the diaper and rubberpants felt weird under our tights.

I am a widower dad with 14 year old twins-son and daughter.Their mom passed away 2 years ago from cancer.I finially had both of them baptized this past May 20th.The son wore a suit and tie and the daughter was taken to the parish nursery by two young nuns and i was told she was going to be dressed as a baby.A while later, the two nuns brought her out and showed her to me and the son.She was in a white, infant style, knee length gown with a matching bonnet and had lace socks and white shoes. The one nun lifted up the gown and showed me and the son the cloth diapers and white, blousy fitting plastic pants and tee shirt she had on under the gown. They told me that that is the standard baptism outfit for the preteen and teen girls. As we walked up to the narthex,we could hear the plastic pants crinkling under the daughters gown. That next week,i had to have the gown and bonnet dry cleaned, and the diapers, plastic pants, tee shirt and lace socks washed and had to return the whole outfit back to the parish.

Our daughter is 15 and finially being baptized on October 14th,in the fall baptism class.Like all the other preteen and teen girls in her class, she is going to wear the standard white, poofy, short sleeve, top of the knees baptism dress with the matching bonnet, white tights and the white mary jane shoes.I have her cloth diaper all ready made from sewing a package of the Gerber flat cloth diapers that come 10 to a package in the 24x27 inch size.I got a card of 6 pink diaper pins at Walmart and will pin the diaper on her with a diaper pin at the right and left sides. I was lucky enough to find a pair of the Playtex toddler-extra large size rubberpants on E-bay,just like the ones i wore back in the 60s for my bedwetting going thru puberty, for her to wear over her diaper. Her tights are the high waist style and will completely cover the diaper and rubberpants and she will have a white tee shirt as her top.She will be just like i was in puberty with the Gerber cloth diaper and the Playtex toddler extra large size rubberpants on under her tights.I all ready have the babypowder and lotion i will use on her when i put the diaper and rubberpants on her.

When we baptized our daughter at 14,we did her in a cute poofy, white above the knees flowergirl dress with the white bonnet, lace socks and the white shoes and did the undershirt and just a pair of toddler size rubberpants under the dress. Her baptism was at 8:30 am mass and then between masses we took of her bonnet and put a communion veil on her head and she made her First Holy Communion at 10 am mass. The toddler rubberpants served both as her baptism and first communion rubberpants and she wore them all day under her dress.

Our daughter is 16 and will be finially recieving her Sacrement of baptism this comming easter sunday April 21,2019.Like all the other girls, she is going to wear the traditional, white sleeveless, knee length baptism dress with a crinoline under it,a matching bonnet, lace anklets[weather permitting] and the white mary jane shoes. She will have the traditional white camisole as her top and the cloth diaper and adult size rubberpants. Her dress and bonnet are on order and she has her camisole and her diaper and rubberpants, lace anklets and the white mary janes. If it is cold on Easter sunday, the back up plan is she will wear white tights over her diaper and rubberpants.First Holy Communion sunday is on May 19th and all of the girls baptized on Easter sunday have to wear their baptism cloth diaper, rubberpants and camisole under their communion dresses,so i will get to put them on her a second time less than a month later!

Our daughter was never baptized as a baby and when she was 15,our neice had a baby girl and 4 months later they made arrangements to have her baptized. Our great aunt came up with the idea to baptize the daughter and the baby together and dress them in identical outfits!A gown and bonnet was bought for the baby, then it was taken to a seamstress to have an identical gown and bonnet made in the daughters size.We got white lace anklets and white shoes for the daughter to wear with the gown and the neice got the lace socks and booties for the baby. The niece was using disposable diapers on the baby,so we decided to do a cloth diaper and rubberpants and tee shirt under the daughters gown. The sunday morning of their baptisms,we dress both of them in the parish nursery. The daughters rubberpants fit her blousy and crinkled under her gown.It was really special having both girls dressed in identical outfits and the daughter held the baby afterwards and it was really cute!

Reading these blogs brought back some unpleasant memories of when i finially made my First Holy Communion at age 17! Our Religious Ed.Director didnt cut me any slack since i was 17,i had to wear the communion dress, veil, tee shirt, cloth diaper, rubberpants, tights and the white patent leather shoes! It was somewhat embarrassing walking down the aisle with the 7 year olds and everyone seeing me in the required outfit and knowing i had the diaper and rubberpants on under my tights! My parents wouldnt let me take them off for my party,so i had to wear them the rest of the day untill bedtime!

We have some cousins who live in Cleveland,Ohio and last Easter their 16 year old daughter, along with all of the other preteens and teens, was baptized on Easter sunday. All of the boys had to wear a white suit and ty and the cousin and all the other girls had to wear a white, short sleeve, knee length, puffy baptism dress with a matching bonnet, lace anklets and white, patent leather shoes and under their dresses, they had to wear a tee shirt with a 10 ply thick cloth diaper and loose fitting, white rubberpants. The cousin looked very cute and infant like in her outfit as did all of the other preteen and teen girls. Before the mass, the girls all gathered in a classroom and were declared as 'babies' for their baptisms by the priest. The cousin and several of the girls wore a pacifier on a ribbon around their necks and were sucking on them while waiting their turn to be baptized.

Imade my First Holy Communion back in 2017 at age 15 with the 2nd graders and mom and gramma bought a pair of toddler size rubberpants of a website and i had to wear them under my communion dress with a tee shirt as my top.It was different having the rubberpants on under my dress and feeling like one of the little girls!

This past sunday during mass at our parish, there were two teen sisters, ages 13 and 15 and a 14 year old boy that were baptized during mass. The boy was in a suit and tie and the two sisters were dressed in matching, puffy white, sleeveless, above the knees baptism dresses with matching bonnets, white tights and white mary jane shoes. Both girls had a cloth diaper and white adult size rubberpants on under their tights with a teddy as their tops. When both girls bent over to recieve the water on their heads, their dresses went up in back and we could see about half of their cloth diaper and rubberpants showing thru their tights! Both girls looked very cute and pure in their outfits.

I am 15 and my best friend,Jenni who is also 15,was baptized last sunday,December 29th,at morning mass. She asked me to be her 'emotional support person' and i was happy to help her out!Since she had to follow the dress code, she had to wear a puffy, white sleeveless, top of the knees baptism dress and bonnet with lace anklets and white mary jane shoes and a teddy as her top with a cloth diaper and plastic pants.I went over to her house after breakfast and she was taking her bath. After her bath,i sat on her bed and held her hand and talked to her while her mom put the diaper and plastic pants and teddy on her.She was nervous and shaking a little as she laid there on her bed and i could tell it was quite emotional for her having to wear the diaper and plastic pants and teddy under her dress! Her mom put the lace socks and shoes on her, then her dress and bonnet and she looked just like a baby!I went with them to the mass and Jenni was baptized, then i was close by her at her party comforting her!

When i was baptized at 14 at Easter mass on Easter sunday,i had to wear the white puffy, top of the knees baptism dress and matching bonnet with the lace socks and white shoes and a white under shirt with the white rubberpants under my dress. The day before,Holy saturday,me,mom and my aunt went to get my hair and nails done and mom and aunt made me wear the rubberpants under a skirt to the beauty parlor, so i would get used to wearing them all day on sunday!I felt somewhat weird sitting there in the chair while my hair and nails were being done with the rubberpants on under my skirt!Mom was watching the girl doing my hair and told her that i was being baptized tomarrow at Easter mass and then she told her that i am going to wear the white puffy dress and bonnet with an undershirt and rubberpants under my dress. She then told the girl that i had the rubberpants on under my skirt and brought it up and showed them to the girl! I was quite embarrassed! The girl told us that she is catholic also and was baptized at 16 and had to wear a cloth diaper and rubberpants under white tights with her dress and bonnet,so i didnt feel quite as embarrassed!

I am a girl,16,and was baptized as a 'baby' two years ago when i was 14.My parents and both sets of granparents told me that since i was boy crazy,i would be a 'baby' for my baptism! That sunday morning they took me to the parish nursery and i had to take off my clothes and lay in a baby crib.A pacifier was put in my mouth, then mom and my two grammas Pinned a thick cloth diaper on me,then put adult size white plastic pants on me over it.Then they put white rhumba tights on me next that had pink ruffles across the back, then a white tee shirt was put on me next.I got out of the crib and stood there and they put a white, infant style baptism gown on me with the poofy shoulders and lace down the front that came down to my knees.A matching bonnet was put on me and tied under my chin.Last,a pair of white satin booties were put on my feet and i looked and felt like a regular 'baby girl'.I was baptized during mass and had the pacifier in my mouth!

Me and a couple of other girls who were 17,felt it was sexist and discriminatory that we had to wear the outfits and yet the boys just had to wear a suit and tie!The boys all gawked at us girls and made us feel uncomfortable in our outfits!

I am a girl 18 and lutheran. Two years ago in 2018,when i was 16,one of my best friends,Ginny, was baptized. She had told me before hand that she was going to wear an all white outfit and i didnt think much about it.She asked me to come over to her house that sunday morning in May to be her "emotional support"person so i agreed.I got to her house around 8 am and she was in the bathtub taking her bath.I went to her room where her mom and gramma were and saw her white baptism outfit laid out on her bed.I was taken aback as there was a folded cloth diaper laying at the center of her bed near the edge with two pink diaper pins beside it,a can of babypowder,a pair of white adult size plastic pants and a white teeshirt. There was a white, short sleeve, poofy dress laying at the end of her bed with a bonnet, lace socks and white patent leather shoes.I really didnt know what to think! Her mom then told me that the outfit is the traditional baptism outfit worn by the girls up to 17 at their parish!Afew minutes later,Ginny came into her room with her towel wrapped around her and i could tell she was somewhat nervous! She told me to sit at the head of her bed,so i did.She took off her towel and sat down on the cloth diaper and laid back, then took my hand and held it! Her mom then applied the baby powder, then as her mom brought the diaper up and pinned it,Ginny squeezed my hand fairly hard! As her mom put her feet into the wiast and leg openings of the plastic pants, she really squeezed my hand untill it started to hurt! Her mom pulled the plastic pants up over the diaper, then put the lace socks and shoes on her, then the tee shirt. She stood up and mom and her gramma put the dress on her, then last the bonnet!Ginny was quite nervous and shaking as she stood there and i couldnt believe what i was seeing!! Her mom lifted up the front of her dress and asked me if Ginny looked like a baby with the diaper and plastic pants on under her dress and i didnt know what to say!Ginny was taken out and shown to her dad and granpa and shortly after they left for their parish.

As a mom,i agree that teen girls should be dressed as babies for their baptisms! It represents the girls purity and innocence of a baby and makes them feel worthy of entering gods kingdom.Being catholic, all of the preteen and teen girls are traditionally dressed as babies for their Easter Vigil baptisms. They all wear the poofy, white above the knees, short sleeve baptism dress and matching bonnet with either white tights or the lace anklets and the white patent leather shoes.Under their dresses they wear a white tee shirt with a white cloth diaper and white rubberpants in adult sizes. Our two daughters are 16 now and we had them baptized two years ago when they were 14 and they both were dressed as baby girls in the white outfits.

As a catholic mom,i fully agree that tween and teen girls should be dressed like babies for their Sacrement of Baptism.Over the years i have seen many teen girls being baptized and dressed in the white, poofy, knee length, baptism dresses with the bonnet, lace socks and white shoes and with a cloth diaper and rubberpants and under shirt on under their dresses.I have seen these girls both at Easter vigil baptisms and baptisms during sunday mass.Too many teen girls become sexually active and loose,so dressing them in the white outfits sends a message that purity and innocence is what god wants in their lives.
