Oh, the Joy....

My cute, wonderful, caring, helpful, giving son....okay, I am being a bit snarky about the way I am thinking those words. I love my son. Really. However, tonight I am not sure if I like him very much.

We told him that he could take guitar lessons if he brought up his grades by the end of January. He has brought them up. Not by a lot, but some. There is a guitar class that will be taught at his school once a week. As his parents we are willing to pay for this. It is even a cool class. Learning "riffs from Green Day, White Stripes and Led Zeppelin. Learn how to craft a rippin' solo or tricked out riff..."

I told Brannon that he would need to take his guitar to school and ask the office if he could leave it there during the day and pick it up after school for the class. Did Brannon act excited? Did he smile? Did he hug his wonderful parents and thank them?

NO!!! He was ornery! He said that his guitar is stoopid and is not an electric guitar. He said, "EVERY BODY ELSE HAS A COOL GUITAR."

I calmly stated that the sign-up form specifically said, "Supply your child with a 1/2 size or 3/4 size guitar." This is what we have. Exactly what we have.

He made Kelly so mad that there was a swear word that came out of Kelly's mouth. (Gasp!)

At this point, I am not sure if Brannon is going to take the class. I am leaving it up to him. Kelly asked me why our kids are so selfish? I think we are all inherently selfish. We just have to be taught by others and learn on our own how not be perpetually self-indulgent.

Love the Boy. Love, love, love him.

I am NOT looking forward to that age- or whatever it is. Everett already pitches a fit when we don't get him a treat at 7-11.....

Selfish kids? This must be one of those dratted Amott genes that snuck through. Haha! How do we cure this? I do not know. Tell him if he's a good boy and REALLY nice and takes the class, LIKES IT, and wants to continue, Auntie and Uncle will get him a "cool" electric guitar for his birthday. :)

We have all been a "Brannon". I'm taking a child development class and it's part of the journey, his journey. But, it's also part of his journey for you to call him on it and let him feel the reprucussions (spelling?) of acting snotty. People always react to selfishness by others in a negative way - I think you and Kelly are right to be mad and maybe take the "chance" away. I think kids feel entitled to all good things and don't realize (until you show them) that these chances have "strings" like being appreciative. Ohhh, I sound preachy, sorry. As you know, M&E are this age, and sometimes they act like teenagers too. It's okay, they're supposed too. Hang in there - YOU ARE A GREAT MOM!
